In the first place, there is no perfect body
Now that your body’s growing and changing — a lot — it’s very easy to be self-conscious and hyperaware of every pimple and extra pound. On top of that, you’re constantly being bombarded with idealized, often computer-enhanced, body images that are impossible to measure up to (and that are not even real).
No wonder most teens feel they’re too fat, too thin, too short, too tall or not pretty enough. This kind of negative body image is often linked with depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and other damaging behaviors.
Body image: both girls and boys worry about it
Given the images in magazines, music videos, movies, and on the Internet, teenage girls can easily get the impression that fashion models and celebrities have perfect bodies and flawless skin.
Likewise, teenage boys compare themselves to the ripped physiques of athletes, models and movie stars and feel dissatisfied if their own bodies don’t measure up. Teenage boys aren’t usually as verbal about body image issues as girls but that doesn’t mean they don’t experience them. Boys who are overweight often endure social isolation and bullying in school, and they can suffer from eating disorders, too.
The good news: we’re here to listen and to help
At Westchester Health Pediatrics, we understand what you’re going through. Not only were we once teenagers ourselves (hard to imagine), but we’ve spent many years listening to our young adult patients talk to us about their struggles. We want you to know that we care about you and how you’re feeling about yourself, as well as about your health.
Plus, we have an on-staff nutritionist who can help you make smart, healthy choices about food, calories and nutrition.
What is discussed with us stays with us
Please come in and talk to us about any aspect of your body, your weight, your skin, your appearance, anything at all — we will keep it confidential. And if together we decide you need some help, we’ll give you some options for that, too.
Most of all, we want to help you be healthy and happy and feel good about yourself in any way we can.
